The truth will set you free.
The Salt and Light Express pays tribute to community libraries and the courage of librarians. A main character is a heroic Latina library director, and the climax of the novel occurs on the library’s plaza. It’s a clash between the search for truth and knowledge and attempts to sanitize and erase our history.
The library in the novel is based on the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library in Kerrville, Texas. It’s where I received my first library card while visiting my grandparents, Adolph and Estelle Ersch.
Much of the book was written in three Delaware libraries — Lewes, Milton and Milford. I love searching a library for nooks and crannies where I can hang out and write.
After attending the American Library Association conference in 2025, I decided to produce a hardcover version just for libraries.

Because of my strong belief in the power of libraries, I would welcome invitations to join you for author events, book clubs, podcasts and other opportunities. In person, if feasible, or via Zoom.
